How to Prep for your Newborn Session

Don’t stress!!   These tips are just a guide and if you get to them Fantastic but if you don’t, it’s no biggie.

Mani's all around. Mom, Dad & Baby. This is so important because i'll be real close in for your baby's tiny features while you hold them. Anyone who plans on being in the session should plan a good manicure a day or two prior. No one wants to see a stray hangnail or grime under fingernails. For Mom, nude colors photograph best. A few of my favorite nude polishes are, OPI My Vampire is Buff (for a more creamy beige, looks great on olive and tan skin tones), Essie Marshmallow is slightly softer cream, for the less is more look, Essie Sugar-daddy &  for a more pink hue, OPI Bubble Bath (my sisters go-to).

The first thing I’ll do when I get to your home is have you show me the rooms with the most desirable light and go from there. (we will talk about this ahead of time together) Once we find the best light , I can do anything that needs to be done to prep for the portraits.

Turn the temp up or have a space heater available. Babies love to be toasty and when we do some wardrobe changes it helps to keep their temp up and their mood chill :)

If the best lighting is in your bedroom or nursery, clear nightstands or prominent counters of clutter or distracting elements. The counters don't have to be bare and they certainly don't need to be lemony fresh... but clearing end tables & nightstands of neon Boppys and water glasses will make the transition between shots smoother.  If I notice any distraction while taking the photos,  it's an easy fix to quickly hide or remove them and then replace them when we are all done :)

The morning of, bathe the baby or use a wet wash cloth to clean away flaky skin and sleepy sandy eyes. If your baby has flaky skin, cradle cap, or eczema, make sure you have a nice moisturizer on hand too. Cuz who doesn't love a fresh clean & dewy skinned baby??!! Am I right??!!

If you feel like getting fancy why not dress up paper diapers?  Cloth diapers are unique and stylish, but if you don’t use them, maybe try bloomers or decorative diaper covers, solid muted colors preferred ( like white, pale pink, faded heather, baby blue etc.).  But my absolute FAV is just Babies in the buff. Honestly the best wardrobe for a newborn! – No outfit fits a newborn well, and they often look swallowed in their clothes. A WHITE  swaddling blanket is going to be our best friend, also a large white blanket is fantastic too! Having your baby on a white background makes their sweet skin tone and eye color naturally pop.

Sentimental quilts, lovie stuffed animals and accessories are good additions to bring, also little hats, dainty headbands, etc. I've got a girl for custom headbands!  You can find her on Etsy & Facebook.      https://www.etsy.com/shop/WaverlyRogue?ref=search_shop_redirect

Trying to nurse your baby right before we are scheduled to start. A full, happy & sleepy baby is what we are lookin for!

Does you little one have a favorite song they relax to? Maybe have a playlist on hand too.

Not much more is needed for fresh & organic photography of your new family!

Moms, I suggest an outfit that’s a little forgiving in the waist for a new mom. An empire-waist dress always pretty, as is
a long tunic blouse with leggings or jeans. And of course, a flowy top with a light cardigan is a beautiful option as well.
Many new moms worry they won’t look their best for newborn photos, but with these options
and some strategic baby-holding-in-front, we can help you feel confident!

Dads, I  suggest keeping your clothing simple and classic. My favorites are a
simple long sleeve or  solid light-colored sweater with trousers or light to medium wash jeans.

Light, neutral colors look best in natural light and with my signature style. As an added
plus, it’s super easy to coordinate outfits with a soft, neutral color palette!

I am so excited for this special session and want you to enjoy it too so if you have any other questions please please ask me!!

We will absolutely be in touch a few times before your session.
